Solid Concrete Bases Built Properly
At Currell Groundworks, we build concrete bases for sheds, garages, workshops, garden rooms and outbuildings across St Ives, Huntingdon, St Neots, Cambridge and surrounding Cambridgeshire villages.
A good base is what everything else relies on. If the concrete base isn’t level, thick enough, or properly prepared underneath, problems start later on — cracking concrete, sinking corners, water sitting against buildings, or doors and frames going out of line.
We build bases properly from the ground up so they stay solid for years to come.
Expertise
Our team has extensive experience in all aspects of concrete base construction, from site assessment to finishing.
Quality Materials
We use only the highest quality concrete and reinforcement materials to ensure the longevity and strength of your base.
Attention to Detail
We pay meticulous attention to every detail, from accurate measurements to precise finishing, guaranteeing a level and stable surface.
Compliance
We adhere to all relevant building regulations and industry best practices.
Concrete Shed Bases
One of the most common jobs we carry out is concrete shed bases.
A lot of sheds end up being installed on old slabs, paving stones or uneven ground which causes problems later. A proper concrete base gives you a strong, level foundation that helps protect the structure and keeps everything stable.
We build bases for:
- Garden sheds
- Summer houses
- Workshops
- Garden offices
- Hot tub bases
- Bin store bases
- Greenhouses
- Garages and outbuildings
Whether it’s a small shed base in a back garden or a larger reinforced concrete slab, we can advise on the best setup for your project.
Ground Preparation is the Important Part
Most people only see the finished concrete, but the real work is underneath it.
Before pouring concrete, we first excavate the area to the correct depth and remove any soft or unsuitable ground. We then install and compact a solid hardcore sub-base to create a stable foundation underneath the slab.
Without proper preparation underneath, concrete can crack or sink over time.
Depending on the job, we may also install:
- Weed-control membrane
- Reinforcement mesh
- Additional hardcore depth
- Drainage solutions if the area holds water
Every garden and every ground condition is different, especially across Cambridgeshire where ground conditions can vary massively from one area to another.
Reinforced Concrete Bases
For heavier structures such as garages, workshops or large outbuildings, reinforcement is often needed to increase strength and reduce the risk of cracking.
We install reinforcement mesh where required and make sure the slab thickness is suitable for the intended load.
If you’re unsure what type of base you need, we’re happy to advise.
Drainage & Water Runoff
Drainage is something that often gets overlooked with concrete bases.
If water can’t drain properly, it can pool around the slab and cause issues later on. We make sure the base is installed with the correct levels and fall where needed to help water run away properly.
For gardens with drainage problems, we can also install additional
drainage solutions if required.
Built for Access Challenges
Not every job has perfect access.
A lot of gardens around St Ives, Huntingdon and older Cambridgeshire properties have narrow gates, tight pathways or restricted access that makes getting machinery in difficult.
We regularly carry out jobs where materials need to be moved through side access or work has to be completed carefully by hand. We always work out the best approach before starting the job.
Local Groundworkers You Can Trust
We’re based in St Ives, Cambridgeshire and take pride in doing honest work to a high standard.
A lot of our work comes through recommendations from previous customers who want a reliable local company that turns up, communicates properly and does the job right.
We treat every job properly whether it’s a small shed base or a larger groundwork project.
Popular Questions
Here are some of the most common questions we get about our concrete base services. If your
question isn’t listed, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to help.
We construct bases for sheds, garages, extensions, workshops, and larger
foundations. Each base is built to suit the size, load requirements, and intended
use of the structure.
For most garden sheds, a thickness of 100mm is sufficient, but heavier structures
like garages or workshops may require 150mm or more. We always assess your project
to recommend the right depth.
Yes, ground preparation is included. We clear vegetation, remove topsoil, and lay a
compacted hardcore sub-base to ensure the concrete is stable and drains correctly.
Where needed, we install steel rebar or wire mesh within the slab to strengthen the
concrete. This is especially important for larger bases or those carrying heavy
loads.
Concrete bases are generally suitable for light use after 48 hours, but we recommend
allowing at least 7 days before placing a shed or structure on top, and 28 days for
full curing strength.
